TOBY 3 KENOBI - YORKSHIRE TERRIER - GREAT YARMOUTH

Post by mulan on Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:55 am

NAME OF DOG - TOBY 3 (KENOBI) - (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH OBE WAN KENOBI)
BREED OF DOG - YORKSHIRE TERRIER
    SEX OF DOG - MALE
AGE OF DOG - 4 YEARS
NEUTERED/SPAYED - NO (BEING ARRANGED ASAP)
VACCINATED - NO - (BEING ARRANGED ASAP)
    MICROCHIPPED - NO
    INSURED - NO BUT RECOMMENDED
    OTHER DOGS - YES
    CATS - YES
    CHILDREN - OLDER CHILDREN 10YRS+
    APPROX WEIGHT - 6.3 kg

Toby is currently being fostered by a lovely lady called Jackie, Jackie normally deals with Staffs and has asked us to re-home Toby through our rescue.

Here is what Jackie has to say about Toby 3 so far:
He is quite understandably a bit nervous but is having a great time running around with the other two dogs I have here. He is more wary of men than women. He gives a warning grumble to the other two when he is eating but doesnt snap. At this point I have lifted the food and he hasn't been food aggressive to me.
He is friendly towards other dogs when out walking. He pulls a bit on the lead but not too bad considering that he wasn't walked regularly
Apart from marking in the kitchen on arrival yesterday, he hasn't messed in the house. Lots of access to outdoors and praise is I think helping him.
He has seen my grandson ( Harley ) who is 8 and growls at him but doesn't go for him, I think its' fear more than nastiness. Harley is quite used to rescue dogs with behaviour problems so we will take it slow and gentle to try to reassure Toby that not all children are ear pulling skin nipping horrible little devils!!

Im sure Jackie will be along soon to update us on his progress and also answer any questions you may have.

Anyone wishing to be considered for the adoption of Toby 3 Kenobi is required to complete an adoption form after reading all the adoption rules & procedures please.
The adoption form can be found by clicking on the here: http://www.yorkieandtoybreedrescue.co.uk/adopting.html

PLEASE READ ALL PARTS OF OUR ADOPTION POLICY AND PROCEDURES

I'd better not show my little boy this little chap as he'd want me to fill in a form, he is mad about STAR WARS! Obi Wan is his favourite character, although it's a dalmation he is always asking for! Yikes!
I think Toby looks alot like my Emmie too.

Update on Toby......I think he was a limpet in a former life, he is a very cuddly, loving little chap. He is great friends with my 8 yr old grandson who helps to walk him. He loves the small furries we have, he is fascinated by the chinchillas and sits watching them for hours. He also loves the ferrets, likes sniffing them and is friendly when nose to nose with them. He has lived with cats so should be ok with them. He has a bit of separation anxiety, scratches the door a little when put in another room, but does settle down. I will update regularly but any questions please ask.

    Hello Jackie,
It says on the intro bit about young Toby that he's suited to children aged 10+. I'm just wondering whether you think he would be OK with under 10s who are very used to and respectful towards dogs and know how to treat them as we have a 10,6,and 5 year old? It's reassuring that he's fond of your 8 year old grandson. We're quite local to you in Stradbroke, Suffolk.

    Hi

Toby has met numerous friends of my grandson and has been fine with them, we have told them all to ignore him and let him come to them. He will have a little growl if anyone catches him unawares, it's fear and within a second or two he jumps up tail wagging.

He is incredibly affectionate, loves to be close to someone. Just turn around and he's behind you gazing adoringly. He is now very good when being walked and im sure any child would be able to manage him.

He isn't food aggressive so no problems with children being around him when eating, for some reason he eats better when my daughter stays with him and encourages him (he's a big baby lol)

I have always had staffords so not had much to do with smaller breeds but he in a great little dog who will make a lovely pet/companion for someone. He has so much love to give and willingly gives it despite mine being his 4th home (albeit temporary).

I realise that's a lot of waffle to answer the children question so to sum up, yes he is suitable for children of various ages (not toddlers), providing they are dog savvy.

    Hope that answers your question

    Jackie

Toby is doing great, he has made himself at home and is acting as if he's lived here all his life!
He has a little bark at visitors but soon stops ( so he can jump up on the sofa with them and have his belly rubbed )
He has realised that children go to bed earlier than adults and if he's quick he can sneak up to bed for an early night
Toby loves his treats but doesn't eat them straight away, they have to be buried first. No breaking a nail digging though, it is all done with his nose He comes indoors looking innocent and pleased with himself but the small mound of earth on his nose is a bit of a giveaway!!

I am keeping my fingers crossed that he soon finds his forever home

    Hi Jackie
The more you say about him the more he sounds completely perfect! Love1 I think we'll be sending in an adoption form as soon as we can plug every yorkie sized gap around our rather rambling garden!! What do you think the little chap's reaction would be to meeting a free-range chicken nose to beak? Plus we do have an ancient bunny (in a run).

    Hi Sam

Rabbit would be of great interest to Toby as he insists on being included in the morning ferret cleaning routine. At other times he enjoys watching their antics. Not sure about the chicken, he chases pigeons from the garden but think thats just fun for him. He has got on well with all other dogs that he has met, male and female.

Wouldn't worry too much about gaps in the fence, Limpet boy doesn't move far away from his humans!! lol

Should be speaking to you soon so we can have a natter about him

I have done Rosalie, we couldn't wait. Hubby's thrilled that he's going to spend the weekend with posts and chicken wire! Trying not to get too excited as there might be huge queue again.
Limpet boy - that's funny lol! That's JUST what mother-in-law wants. again.

Toby is having visitors Sunday afternoon, have been explaining to him that he must be on his best behaviour lol. As I write this he is doing his personal cleaning in readiness!!

Last night he went to bed with my grandson and stayed there all night, bad habits I know but he just loves being close to someone.

He is a very brave young man and barks at all visitors, all of whom now say "Hello Toby, you don't scare me" This is all quickly followed by excited greetings and cuddles.

Toby loves his walks and has made numerous friends on his travels, including a staffie with severe behaviour problems who after a very log time is only now starting to like other dogs.

Well young Toby wasn't on his best behaviour on Sunday Not his fault of course, all part of the 'i'm nervous of people until i get to know them' thing. He had lots of nervous growls which I completely understand now but must take some getting used to when meeting him for the first time. Toby kept coming to us for reassurance that all was well, it's amazing what 2 weeks of kindness can do for a dog!

Today I let him off the lead while on our walk and he behaved brilliantly, trotting proudly by my side. When he strayed slightly he came back immediately he was called.

He has friends to stay for a few days ( my sons 2 chorkies). He is an excellent host, showing them how to take their dinner onto the lounge carpet, how to sit on the backs of chairs and how if you move fast you can trip people up on the stairs!!

It tears at my heart strings that he has put so much trust in us and that at some point he is going to have to do it all again with someone else. I've fostered enough staffies to know the score, just a bit of a softie lol

Toby behaved fine bless him. We loved spending time with him and completely understand that he was and is going to be nervous for a while with new people. We weren't phased by the grumbling and it was wonderful the way he then came gingerly over for a stroke once he'd growled almost as if he was apologising. Love1 Jackie, we are really still very keen to adopt Toby boy if you think that everything went ok. I have sent a pm to Sue to ask what next steps are as both you and I are new to this lovely rescue organisation. Hopefully a home check might follow soon. Any news about when he might have 'the op' - don't let him hear!
I can tell how attached you and your family are to him and it's amazing the trust he's put in you because of your love and care. It must be so difficult to foster and then part with him even when you've done it before with staffies. for your time and advice on Sunday. I've lost your phone number Jackie Headbasher so wonder if you'd be kind enough to ring me when there's any more news please?
Must stop waffling and put daughter to bed. We Love2 Toby

Hope he's being a polite host, sounds like he's a pro teaching them all his moves!

A little update on Toby who is laying next to me feeling very sorry for himself!
Yesterday he went to the vets to be neutered. As he had such smelly breath, I also asked the vet to check his teeth while he was under anaesthetic. When we picked him up it was one hell of a shock to learn they had removed 16 teeth!!! A 4 year old dog losing so many teeth worried me somewhat ( thanks Sue for the reassurance when I phoned )

This toothless ballless little man was also microchipped so I think he's entitled to feel sorry for himself!

Today he will spend his time resting and I will spend my time cleaning 'bloody' dribbles from a beige carpet!!

Despite his discomfort, Toby just wants to sit next to someone and be stroked and loved, still so very trusting of us all.
