Jake has come into the rescue after his devastated owners have made the decision to rehome him to a more specialised Yorkie home. He has been very well loved and this shows...he has been the perfect house guest! Jake came to live with his old owners at 18 months old. He had originally been bought as a gift for a small child and re-homed as the family worked full-time and couldn't give Jake the attention he required. Once he became settled into their care it became apparent that Jake suffered from 'episodes'. Jake licks, throws his head back and lifts his front paw for no apparent reason. His owners were later told that this behaviour started after he was neutered.

Jake is a very affectionate and friendly little chap, he is very bold and inquisitive. He loves to go for a walk and is great off lead and on. He has been great with all of the dogs he has met so far and is a lovely little dog. He has had a series of allergy tests with his owners vet and no diagnosis for his odd behaviour has been determined. He is not distressed when licking himself, he has been doing this on a night and waking his shattered owners up several times with the licking noise (I was so tired last night I slept right through!!)

Before an application is made please read the following carefully:
Please do not apply for the dog unless you have the funds to pay the donation fee, We do not have the facility to hold dogs in our care until the prospective owners have the funds to adopt the dog.
Only apply for the dog if you intend to travel to the fosters carers location, We do not deliver dogs or allow a third party to collect, the adoptor/s must travel to view the dog.
Anyone wishing to be considered for the adoption of *JAKE* is required to complete an adoption form after carefully reading all the adoption rules & procedures please.
The adoption form can be found by clicking here: http://www.yorkieandtoybreedrescue.co.uk/adopting.html

Helen has he been tested for thyroid as I have been reading up on this re Tim.. ( he has some of those symptoms ) ( under active ) if he has then fine just an idea.. blood test can determine .. usually starts after being neutered.. as with Tim unless he was doing before I had him... with treatment they can live a normal life .. am hoping this is my problem solved but who knows see vet Monday.. Looks a cute little fella sorry if my post has put some off but see past that folks..

Jake is a lovely little dog, he has only been with us for a day but he is so settled and has fitted so well with my dogs Max, who is the fussiest dog to please...loved him the moment he met him He has taken him under his wing today and even got him a toy out of the basket to encourage him to play Here's a video of him playing with it...
    (hope it works!!)

Please don't be put off by the licking episodes as they really aren't that bad (the video shows him doing it). I am going to take him to meet our vet this week but he appears to be a really healthy dog. I would love to hear from anyone who has had a dog similar to Jake and what strategies they put in place to deal with his 'episodes'. At the moment I just ignore them as when I was trying to take photos of him it made him more conscious and he did it more (hence the video). It seems a little bit like a doggy version of Tourrettes??

He has also fallen for my 8year old and has followed him everywhere today Love3 He is very gentle and playful and a thoroughly lovable little

Thanks for that hun..will have a word with the vets. His old owners will be on here soon and will fill in any gaps as they have had LOTS of different tests. We have had a full vet history sent to our vets anyway. Too be honest I think most available tests were exhausted and it's possible that he's just Jake and he is this way. He has a lovely coat and is in otherwise great health Very Happy

Awww isn't he lovely, could be a bit like an 'OCD', our Katy goes round in circles if she is stressed or shut in a small walled garden which we think goes back to when she was in the breeding kennels she only goes round to the right which is why we have been told its like a doggy OCD but its just her character and we have got used to it now, we fuss her and she stops usually. Hope Jake finds a lovely home soon

Thanks hun...I really hope he does find a home soon or I see me falling for him affraid He's only been here two days and is the perfect house guest sunny I had a friend come in to see to the dogs today while I went to take Manny and bring Saffy here and they couldn't believe how well he greeted them..he was so friendly and even sat on their daughters knee for a cuddle Love3 He had never met them before either Clapping

He's laid out asleep on one of the dog beds, snuggled up without a care in the world Love2 I think as long as your a good sleeper, and potential adopters will be fine with him. He slept on my bed again last night and didnt wake me up Sleep

Hmmm...waiting for old vets info to be transferred across to my vets...but yeah that's my line of wondering at the moment too Very Happy He's perfectly healthy (well I'm definatly no vet...but he appears perfectly healthy Very Happy ), he is too lovely for words Love3 He has been very well loved...which shows..he just needs a family that can see past the twitching, licking and flicking

I've just got the video to work - it definately looks like some sort of abscence seizure to me, but what an adorable little chap and it doesn't seem to bother him at all Rosie watched the video with great interest Love3 that he finds a home quickly where he will be loved quirks and all.

I watched it too & it really does not appear to bother him. Love the way he stops for a quick flick & lick & then carries on lol!

    Hi

Does Jake do the licking etc when he has not got a collar on? just looked on the video and it looks like his name tag is banging on his legs some yorkies have very sensitive spots on there front legs our Archie does and if his name tag is to big and bumps on his leg then he licks at it.

Jacquie, not sure on that one, but I am sure Helen can answer that. Good thinking, but we are thinking possible siezures/brain damage as old owners said he was apparently ok (they took him on at 18 mths old) up until he was neutered? Possible starvation of oxygen whilst under GA?? All vet reports are being sent to Helens vet so we can see exactly what has been tested & what we need to do now. Thank you though for your thought, it is a good one. My monkeys do not keep their collars with tags on whilst in the house so I have not seen one do this.

Thanks for that but no I think it's probably some kind of seizure, at first I wondered if it was an attention thing as he looks straight 'at' you while he's doing it Suspect I really dont think he's looking 'at' me now but more through me when he's doing it. His coat is lovely and soft. He has been fed a great diet etc and had plenty of allergy testing. He also had a 'vacant' moment on the field today where he just froze and shook Shocked Then he started squealing as though someone was hurting him, shivered and carried on walking as though nothing had happened Crying or Very sad

He doesnt do it all of the time though and can have some quite big gaps in between Very Happy Taking photos on my camera made him worse yesterday so will take videos from now on as I dont want to unsettle him. He's laid next to me at the moment giving me a lovely cuddle and is such a gentle little dog Love3 He has come in here (only came on Friday night) and has made himself completely at home

I ordered a DAP diffuser the other day to see if it would help Jake relax a little, it arrived yesterday and I'm sure I can see a difference Suspect He isn't flicking and twitching as much at all today (still licking) Does anyone know if it can make a difference that quickly or if he may just be having a good day? Here's a video taken yesterday before I plugged it in..

and heres one today after a day with the diffuser...what does everyone else think? Suspect

It worked for our Archie when he was a puppy and we first brought him home, it definately seems to calm them down. You can see Jake hardly flicks at all in the second video would be lovely to think this has worked for him, maybe the next few days will tell flower

He could just be seeing things around him clearer not all shook up all the time. So he may be a little frightened with the changes, try giving him a cuddle and reassuring him.
If you have not done that already today.
If the shakes are to do with his brain and lake of /air/gas in the anaesthetic he had he has been like that for a long time.
He will settle down again soon.

Yes he was castrated at 18 months old and like this afterwards. I haven't taken him to the vets yet as I wanted to give him lots of time to settle down before I took him. I'm off work on Wednesday so will book an appointment then. The flicking has settled right down.

He just barks for no (apparent) reason, can be laid asleep and then affraid big loud bark...or watching the others and then affraid also at noises outside. Its fine but not great at 2am when I let him out for a wee affraid He does respond when I tell him to stop but it is a lot.

He is such a lovely little dog though and these things take time...just that the 'barking phase' passes quickly lol!

You can buy a collar that sprays when the dog barks, but it is more expense, but good for training purposes. Better-ware do one with a 2 year guarantee.

I have one and they can take up to 3 months, my vet advised me to try it, it was worth it for Holly, I have noticed a change, in her case stressed it took a few weeks. Worth the monthly expense for the refills.

Jakes barking is improving cheers If I do the 'go on your bed and time out bit' Jake doesn't really understand Crying or Very sad so I just do it the basic way 'Jake shut up! affraid' and that seems to work lol! His twitching is definately easing but still present, but please don't be put off by this as he's a lovely, gentle little dog. He loves my 8year old and cries when he goes to bed Sad I have now given in and let him go to bed at the same time as it's so much easier than 2 hour+ of crying for Zak

He is tucked up asleep as I type snuggled up with his best friend Zak loves him as he follows him around...it's very cute He has started running about on the field and even played ball tonight Basketball Jake is one lovely happy little
