Bert - Lhasa Apso (with attitude) - West Yorkshire

Post by yorkiegirl on Wed Jun 24, 2009 9:47 am

Had a call from the dog pound in Hull today asking if we can take in a Lhasa boy, approx age 6+, very badly matted, but he appears to have an issue with having a lead attached to his collar & also once on an issue with having it taken off again Crying or Very sad . His 7 days are up on Friday & so far no one has called to see if one has been handed in, so we are feeling that he has just been dumped Crying or Very sad
If we can get a foster carer near where he is that will be great, but if not I will go & fetch him on Monday/Tuesday & bring him here with us.
As he is a pound dog no history is known so for this reason a home where there are no children certainly under the age of 10 would be asked or anyone with cats. I am not sure what he is like with other dogs so I will call them to ask that question. He has no name at present but I am sure that once he is released we can all think of one for him. I am told that he is a pale sandy colour (bet after a good bath he is white Rolling Eyes )
If anyone feels that they have the time, patience (& a pair of chain mail gauntlets affraid ) to possibly help this guy then could you pm either myself or one of the admin team.

Poor little man. He will be thoroughly traumatised by being in the pound. Stacks of love, patience and quiet will help him learn to overcome his fears I'm sure. If I was not on stork duties with my eldest daughter, I'd have him like a shot. I can't WAIT to see him though ... Mmmm, Lhasas!! I LOVE 'em. xxx

I have done a dash to the rescue where he was and brought him here with me, but he and Tillywilly are fighting. He seemed fine with the rescue dogs, but for some reason they have not hit it off. We need to get him into an experienced home as soon as possible. I've sent out an email so please all check your inboxes for details. He is a lovely boy though very confused as to what the heck is happening. He's been shaved and bathed and is now smelling sweeter. He does have some issues but with some work I'm sure he will be a great pet. If you can't help, perhaps you know someone who can? Please let one of admin know as soon as possible. thank you all. x

just a quick update. He was fine over night in his crate. He howled and gave some grumpy barks for about 5 mins and then settled all night. He seems very relaxed in a crate so he is probaly used to being confined.

He's been out for a pee and a poo and does not have the 'runs'. He is NOT house trained and judging from his behaviour, may not have had much experience of actually being inside a house.

He is hormone fuelled and will benefit greatly from having his bits chopped off so he can forget about increasing his gene pool and settle into being a dog and not a puppy making machine.

He follows me about the garden and needs to be where I am, but has no concept of coming when called or basic commands. This little one is a blank canvass.

I ask that you dig deep into your hearts and if you have the time, the patience and experience, and an open mind you will give this little one a chance. He really does deserve it.

I will get some pics when he goes into the garden next time. I don't want to stress him in his crate. He sees that as a place of safety. Be warned though. He was definately short changed in the cute department!! Aww, bless him. But when his fur grows back he will look different again. Honest!!

Poor little lad ....at least he is safe with you for now, widdle. Pity he and Tillywilly don't get on Sad Very difficult for you to keep them apart all the time
All good wishes ......it sounds as though he would be really rewarding for some loving, experienced fosterer with the time and patience to work with him.

He will Nita. You can see that he really wants to relax, but I suspect he has very good reason not to be able to just yet!! Here are some pics for you all. Its was difficult to get any good ones as he just does not keep still!!

I really do hope he finds someone to love and give him the attention he deserves soon.

Guess what? Got a harness on him and we have just been walkies. Yes I know its late, but he had soo much energy that I thought it best so he would be able to settle down for the night. He walks like an absolute DREAM. At some point he must have been walked as he was so good. No pulling what so ever. He stayed right at my heel and if I stopped so did he. We came across a dog, a JRT who was running loose outside the house he lives at. The dog went nuts and Dylan completely ignored him. Did not even make eye contact, nothing. What a good boy!! We walked up the main road and there were speeding cars, a bus and a lorry and he wasn't phased in the slightest. This little man is going to make a first grade super duper pet. I'm certain. I can't wait to see him in a couple of weeks after his wotnots have been snipped off and his hormones have faded into a distant memory.

Thank you Dawny. I hope we do too. Have you had a good holiday?

Well, we have had more progress today. He was rather 'bolchy' this morning so we went walkies and again to get rid of some energy and he was very good. He has been very nervous but I've spent the day just being with him and talking and stroking him. He finds it difficult to sit still for too long as he is desperate to escape and find a female. Hormone boy!! I wonder if there is a bitch on heat around somewhere that he can smell? Still, he has allowed me to stoke him all over and enjoyed it and even allowed me to brush him all over too. I just keep talking to him and telling him he is a good boy. I was going to do some clicker work with him to see how he responds this evening, but he has had a big day already and I don't want to push it too much.

He and Tillywilly walk on the lead together fine, but as soon as we are home again and I let them off - they fight. I guess Princess Tillywilly just doesn't fancy him!!! So I'm having to keep them seperated, which is very difficult as I only live in a shoe box sized bungalow.

He has no idea about the basic commands, but will learn quickly (I think) with the right stimulus. Due to his age I think a clicker will be the best bet for him. It is such a great training aid as it marks the exact behaviour that you are trying to reward, and therefore they usually 'get it' far easier and quicker than with other methods.

He really is going to make a lovely pet, bless him. xxx

Aw, good luck to Dylan - he looks very cute... if not a little grumpy but who can blame him! That'll all change after a few more days with you though I'm sure - sounds like he's settling down a bit already! And once he's been snipped I'm sure he'll be an even more lovable little rogue!

Good luck with this little man , how wonderful for him to have this chance, you are amazing for taking him on. Hope another fosterer can carry on your work with him; I'm the same situation as yourself nowadays as I live in a very small house and with 3 dogs already any newcomers have to reasonably fit in as keeping them separate for any length of time is really problematic.
The removal of the bits should help!

I agree with Iwannawiddle, this poor lad needs a hell of a lot of love and time and patience, just to understand that not all people are bad and not everyone wants to cause him pain.

My heart goes out to this poor man and if I can help in anyway at all then please let me know, I would love to work with him and help him, but I appreciate my circumstances may be the best for this little lad.

Wishing you all the luck in the world in securing another loving foster home for now, and who knows maybe just a footstep away from you forever home.

    Best Wishes.

    Tracy.

I'd like to thank everyone who offered to help this little man. He has now gone to Mair who will work with him and see him through his neutering when hopefully she will be able to report some nice changes.

Good luck Mair and thank you very much for coming to our assistance and helping Dylan.

Update from his wonderful (but scarred Rolling Eyes ) foster carer.
Dillon now called Bert is slowly improving. He is off to the vets tomorrow to be neutered (lets hope that it will take away all that 'male' urges that he has. He has been she thinks in the past beaten as he appears to have a few broken ribs (old breaks) & possibly had a broken jaw affraid . This was suggested when the vet saw him for his pre op examination. This poor boy really has we feel had an awful past.
He will definately NOT be rehomed with children under 16 years old no matter how dog savvy they are. He appears to favour men more than women, widdle said that & now his current foster mum has confirmed it as she had her brother visit & Bert was quite taken with him. He would we feel be better in a home where he would get all the attention & possibly just with a male?
Just want to wish Bert luck at the vets tomorrow.
While he is sleeping he will also have xrays taken to see if our suspisions are founded & also his teeth & ears checked.

Doesn't it make your heart bleed. How can people be so cruel and heartless. I just take solace in the fact that what comes around, goes around. The rotten pig that has inflicted such horrors on a little dog will get their just deserts, one day. I hope its slow and painful too! Good luck Dylan. We are all rooting for you here at Widdle Towers. xxx

Poor little mite, I wish him all the very best and I know he will get the very best of care and a wonderful new home as did my lovely mallachie when the time comes.

Yes the horrible heartless people who had him will certainly get there just deserts eventually, as you say what goes around comes around only three times more. They do not deserve the privaledge of owning any dogs or other animals in the future.

    All the best dylan.xxx

Definately 2 previously broken ribs & his lower jaw has also been fractured in the past. Hi s neutering went well.
He has now been moved into the care of one of Kathy Trout from West Yorkshire Dog Rescue's foster carer as he had to be moved from his last carer due to his 'being the boss' attitude.
We are now going to jointly monitor him & see who has the best possible home for him once he is ready.
